LDN Talks@Night|Existential Philosophy vs Fight Club
This Funzing Experience:
Welcome to Fight Club.
The first rule of Fight Club is: you do not talk about Fight Club.
The second rule of Fight Club is: you DO NOT talk about Fight Club!
Tonight, we are going to break those rules. Using themes and quotes from the book and Film “Fight Club”. I’ll discuss how they relate to concepts from Existential Philosophy (Nietzsche, Sartre, Kierkegaard) and how we might use Existential Philosophy to live more passionate meaningful lives, face adversity and stay mentally tough. I’ll also refer to existential writers and existential psychotherapists.
Existential Philosophy and Psychotherapy are focused on human freedom, choice, responsibility, meaning, purpose, individuality, authenticity, anxiety, isolation and relationships. In this talk I’ll cover these topics as well as self-concept, mental health consumerism, male identity and masculinity, death and mortality, suicide, denial, God and abandonment. I’d say that’s pretty good value.
If you haven’t seen the film or read the book it doesn’t matter you’ll still be able to follow this talk and I won’t put any spoilers in.
Adults Only. Due to the content and themes covered in this talk there will be strong language with references to sex and violence.
City CBT Coaching College will provide a continuing professional development (CPD) letter confirming two hours of CPD.
Here’s some ideas from Fight Club and Existentialism to think about
“It’s only after we’ve lost everything that we’re free to do anything.”
“This is your life, and it’s ending one minute at a time” (Fight Club Book)
“Everyone you love, will reject you or die” (Fight Club Book)
“You are not special. You are not a beautiful or unique snowflake. You’re the same decaying organic matter as everything else”. (Fight Club Movie)
“We’re a generation of men raised by women. I’m wondering if another woman is really the answer we need”. (Fight Club Movie)
“Self-improvement is masturbation…” (Fight Club Book)
“You know, the condom is the glass slipper of our generation. You slip it on when you meet a stranger. You dance all night, then you throw it away.” (Fight Club Book)
“Man is nothing else but that which he makes of himself. That is the first principle of Existentialism”. (Sartre)
“Dostoievsky once wrote “if God did not exist, everything would be permitted”; and that, for existentialism, is the starting point”. (Sartre)
“The most spiritual men, as the strongest, find their happiness where others would find their destruction” (Nietzsche)
“There is always some madness in love. But there is also always some reason in madness.” (Nietzsche)
“People demand freedom of speech as a compensation for the freedom of thought, which they seldom use” (Kierkegaard)
“The most common form of despair is not being who you are.” (Kierkegaard)
“Once you label me you negate me.” (Kierkegaard)
The small print
“Warning: If you are reading this then this warning is for you. Every word you read of this useless fine print is another second off your life. Don’t you have other things to do? Is your life so empty that you honestly can’t think of a better way to spend these moments? Or are you so impressed with authority that you give respect and credence to all that claim it? Do you read everything you’re supposed to read? Do you think everything you’re supposed to think? Buy what you’re told to want? -Chuck Palahniuk, Fight Club
